My newly running Soviet watch next to my seiko 5 which I believe just has a broken pendulum connection (If thats what it’s called that propels an automatic movement).
I love having a watch again! Also I prefer this simple time only mechanical movement. Simple is good. I should know the date inherently and moon phase... I’ll look up in the sky.
It is surprisingly accurate and seems like a robust movement. It’s a little rough around the edges, but a gorgeous watch. I’ve gotten many compliments already.

A bad ass 24hr international watch. Open that caseback and lemme see.

This is an old soviet piece, definitely cold war era. I’m basing this off of the inner ring of text, the case shape, and the fact that there are a ton of Russian watches out there with this 24 hour dial and two crown arrangement. It is an extremely common old soviet movement if I’m right. This could be an original but it is also possibly cobbled together from miscellaneous bits. The USSR just took over a bunch of watch factories back in the day, and produced a variety of different “brands” in the same factories across different locations. Paketa, Vostok, and Luch are examples. Though I have never seen that combination of markings on the dial before, so IDK what the deal is with that. Could be obscure, but I think it is a redial.

I just updated the post with your request!

Definitely looks similar in some respects for sure. Odd is that mine has text in Russian where your picture has “made in ussr”.

That is a thing of beauty.

The Russians would put dozens of different dials in the same case over a couple decades, and you can buy bags full of movements, dials, and hands on ebay for nothing. These are the initiate’s plaything in the horology world, the one grabbed as an example was just the first one I found with your case shape :) and is also probably cobbled together from miscellaneous bits. This is why your average vintage soviet watch like this is worth well under $50, while a NOS unit with the box and papers would be closer to $200
This is why soviet watches are so fun. They’re janky, inaccurate, and almost never 100% original. You can see the same inner bezel on the top 2, but they’re in different cases. Your inner bezel is also featured in on the bottom watch, which I grabbed from an NOS listing.

Thanks! Now I just gotta get it running

Hmm. Interesting. It didn’t seem like an expensive movement or watch in general, which is also I guess why it has never been running since I’ve seen it lol. What is NOS?

Yeah, post again when you figure that out.

New Old Stock

Ah sorry! New Old Stock. So for example if you bought a vintage set of wheels that had never left the box, they are “new” but also “old stock.” If you want a Russian watch that has not been messed with by anyone who isn’t a watchmaker, the only way to be sure is to order one that is still in the box. Check out how weird these get... this is just a slice of the Russian section of my archive. I have a problem...
Luch one hander
In general, the USSR aesthetic is just cool AF on a watch.
Propaganda watches!
The antarctic expedition is featured on many 24 hour soviet pieces.
This model is called “the copernicus” and I need one.
This is a Chinese-Soviet friendship watch, very rare in good condition.
I saved the best for last. This watch is called the “Sputnik” and that sub dial on the bottom is the second hand, it rotates and exposes the time in seconds with a little hole.
From the sidebar, it looks like you wrench - if you aren’t worried about becoming as sick in the head as me... (horology will suck you in and quickly get just as insane as the car stuff) I would try to find someone selling one of those movements on ebay and just put the entire thing in yourself. Paying for a service would be exponentially more than this is worth haha. The movement should be $20 or less. They sell them in bulk!

Will do... might be a while tho lol

Wow those are all so unique. Thanks for all that info! Watches are awesome. I have be thinking on how to do a self service, but it looks like it would be pretty expensive initially with the proper tool purchases and such. Not all that expensive I guess, but when I’ve got a bunch to do to my car and not much time for another hobby, I will prob just keep it in the back of my mind for now.

Of course! Instead of a self service you can always find something like all of the watches I showed you on ebay for $50 or far less :)

The only ussr watch in my collection, it’s a child’s seconda.Sorry for the blurry pic but it’s absolutely tiny.

That’s crazy! Though it will be hard for me wearing an inaccurate watch. I have genuine ocd.

Nice is it smaller than a seiko 5? I kinda like the smaller watches

It’s smaller than a quater.

Ugh I’m sorry to hear that. I have a fun cocktail of issues, OCD is one, but not the biggest problem by a long shot. Most mechanical watches - especially automatics - will “loose” or “gain” a few seconds per day, which will add up over a couple weeks and you’ll have to move the minute hand once a month when you notice if it’s your only watch. Even a Rolex! A nice swiss piece should keep it well under 5 seconds per day, and a russian piece may be more like 10 or 20 so you’re noticing that its off on a daily or weekly basis haha.

Haha that’s ridiculous
![]() 04/07/2018 at 18:16 |

Yeah I get that and I was able to manage it when my seiko 5s were within a few seconds a day accuracy. But then they stopped working (well I replaced the first one cause it slowed to minutes slow a day) I just have no watch lol.

time for a casio WR!
![]() 04/08/2018 at 12:41 |

Haha. But free flowing hand tho. Also by the way I may have gotten the Soviet watch running. Is it normal to have to wind the mainspring in reverse and also when the crown is down?? I have it running currently on my wrist!

DUDE!!! NO WAY!!! hahah awesome
![]() 04/08/2018 at 15:23 |

I know!! It’s still running strong!! I happened to have a matching strap and had to put it on. It’s nice to have a watch again (tho I’ve kept checking it hoping it is still running all day lol). Is that the normal way to wind a mechanical watch tho? I’ve only had the automatics until now.
![]() 04/08/2018 at 18:33 |
|
Yep that’s normal! Dude that’s exciting AF haha omg. Russian movements are industrial AF, I am not surprised it just needed to be wound. That strap is so perfect, it had me doing a double take to make sure that black leather one wasn’t a figment of my imagination lol.

I’m stoked to have a watch again! Still going strong and accurate. Lost some seconds today, but I’ll take it! Got some compliments at work. After I thought about it, it makes perfect sense that in order to wind the mainspring up I would have to go against the grain. I was for some reason under the impression that you wound a watch by advancing the time. Ignorance lol. Now I get the movement and how to care for it.
